On the occasion of Canada’s 150th birthday when I see pictures of the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau shaking hands with a Native Chief I cannot help but wonder will this be the future of the Assyrians in the Assyrian heartland? Are we going to have to make peace with our occupier whether Arab or Kurd? It’s a very difficult struggle that indigenous people have gone through. We deserve our rights as human beings and as original and native peoples of our lands. Why is it that we are not allowed to be masters of our land? As a creative people is it our future to suffer because we do not have vast amounts of money and influence in the world?
The people of the world need to come together as one and everyone’s cultures need to be treasured. We are indigenous Assyrians and our heritage is on the brink of extinction just like that of the Natives and Aboriginals of Canada. For this reason all people and especially humanitarians of the world need to be sensitive to our case also. The North of Iraq is Assyria! We cannot deny this and should not.
Giving our land to foreign people will only create more trouble in the future. We want peace but for how long will our pride be trampled?
The Kurds want the Assyrian heartland as their own. Why though don’t they go back to their original homeland which is in Iran and Afghanistan? I’m sure there is a lot of room for them to build their civilization there. Why do they target the land of a poor people like the Assyrians? We want to build our Assyrian land, we want to have a civilization, we want our culture and language to flourish and grow, but we need the help of the rest of the world to do that. Peoples of the world need to help the Assyrians because we are the last of our kind and because our civilization is a treasure.
We have come a long way from ancient times to the year 2017. In a hundred years will there be Assyrians on Earth? I really hope so because our culture is beautiful, our cause is righteous, and our people are worthy just like the Natives and Aboriginals of Canada! We deserve our land in ASSYRIA!
